Don't believe me? Try the simple two-step experiment below.
- Type the phrase what women hate about their bodies into the search engine of your choice. Don't put it in quotes. Just type the words, click "Search" and see what comes up. When I did a Google search, nearly every one of the top ten results featured "women hate their bodies" verbatim.
- Now search the phrase what women love about their bodies. (Again, don't use quotes.) In my Google search, none of the top ten results displayed "women love their bodies" verbatim. In fact, the majority contained negative words like
- dissatisfaction
- afraid
- ashamed
Where is the Love?
Why is it so easy to find materials and articles describing women's dissatisfaction with their bodies, but nearly impossible to find supportive and positive images of what women love about their bodies?Don't we deserve better treatment than what we're getting from advertising, television, music, films, magazines - nearly all forms of media we come in contact with?
The negative input is nonstop. Where's the love? Since it's not showing up on the internet's top sites with any reliability, we're going to have to create an avalanche of positive content ourselves to counteract all the dissatisfaction.
Not Perfect, But Positive
Let's start here and now. Think about your own body. Just this once, block out everything negative. Can you come up with a handful of things you love about your body?Don't hold back. Don't feel ashamed. Write down what you appreciate about your physical form. Come up with a list of what you love about your body. It doesn't have to be perfect - just a part of you.
